ENEOS Launches Japan's First Automated Modular Battery Swapping Station for Electric Vehicles

ENEOS Holdings, in partnership with North American start-up Ample Inc. and MK Holdings, has taken a significant step towards supporting the growing electrification of vehicles by launching Japan’s first fully automated modular battery swapping station in Minami-ku, Kyoto City. This pilot project aims to address the challenges of long recharging times and the need for convenient energy solutions, especially in sectors like logistics and transportation where electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming essential for reducing environmental impact.

Addressing the Challenges of EV Adoption

As the world shifts towards a carbon-neutral society, the rise of electric vehicles presents both opportunities and challenges. While EVs offer a cleaner alternative to traditional car engines, the long recharging times have become a barrier to widespread adoption. For industries like taxi services and logistics, where downtime can be costly, having a quick and efficient energy solution is crucial.

To meet these needs, ENEOS has combined its extensive expertise in energy supply with Ample’s innovative modular battery swapping system. This system allows for faster, more efficient recharging, ensuring EVs can get back on the road quickly—just as easily as changing motor oil in a traditional car.

A Collaborative Effort for a Sustainable Future

MK Taxi, the largest taxi fleet in Kyoto Prefecture, has been actively working towards electrifying its fleet but faced challenges related to recharging infrastructure. This pilot project will help MK Taxi overcome those hurdles by providing a more seamless energy supply system for their EVs. In doing so, ENEOS, Ample, and MK are examining the potential for new energy infrastructure that can support widespread vehicle electrification and provide a model for future commercialization.

ENEOS’s Vision for Tomorrow

As part of its ongoing commitment to a carbon-neutral, recycling-oriented society, ENEOS continues to innovate and explore new energy solutions. Through the Emerging Business Development Division and ENEOS Innovation Partners, established in 2019, the company has invested in over 40 start-up companies to drive open innovation and the development of new energy, materials, and services.

ENEOS is determined to lead the way in creating a sustainable future, just as it has supported the energy needs of today’s world. From providing high-quality motor oil for traditional vehicles to exploring cutting-edge solutions like modular battery swapping for EVs, ENEOS is at the forefront of the energy transition, ensuring that both car engines and electric motors have the energy infrastructure they need for efficient operation.
